Quality Dental Implants in North Edmonton
DENTAL IMPLANT RESTORATIONS BY EXPERIENCED DENTISTS
When you lose a tooth and another isn’t growing back in its place, there are a few different ways to replace them – bridges, partials, complete dentures, to name a few. At Northtown Dental Associates in north Edmonton, we also like to give our patients the option of dental implants. As long as you’re in good health, and have healthy gums in addition to having enough bone in your jaw, they’re a great option for anyone, young or old or any age in between both aesthetically and in terms of practical use.
The basic premise of getting a dental implant is placing a permanent crown in to replace your missing tooth. Dental implants can also be used to support crowns, bridges and dentures.
WHY CHOOSE DENTAL IMPLANTS?
There are many reasons a person would choose to go with implants instead of a bridge or dentures. Here are a couple advantages to think about when you’re deciding whether they’re right for you and yours:
No complications - No nearby teeth need to be adjusted or prepared to hold your new tooth or teeth in place.
No embarrassing moves - Because they are a permanent fixture attached to your jawbone, you don’t have to worry about implants slipping or shifting when you’re talking or eating versus a bridge or dentures.
Supportive, not supported – Because implants don’t rely on neighbour teeth for support, they’ll actually keep nearby teeth from shifting and moving so you’ll keep your jawbone and face contour.
Confidence is key – because they’re permanent, you’ll feel more confident when eating or talking.
Staying power - Once you have your implants put in place, barring any complications, you won’t have to replace them after a few years.
The largest takeaway from the conversation you will have with your Edmonton dentist about dental implants vs any other replacement teeth option is that implants are permanent – once you have them put into place, (and are following a regular and healthy dental program) you won’t have to worry about dealing with complications around that tooth again. They’ll stay in place so you won't experience embarrassing teeth slips or costly replacement if damaged or lost.
DENTAL IMPLANTS PROCEDURES
Because every patient has different implant needs, before we do any work, we will ask you questions about your medical history and other aspects of your lifestyle relating to your oral health to determine your eligibility. At that time, we’ll also do x-rays of your teeth, jaw, and head to ensure you are physically eligible. If you are a good candidate, you’ll be referred to a specialist who will put a dental implant into your jawbone beneath the gum tissue, which is then stitched back in place. As it heals, the implant bonds with the bone and attaches to the gum. Once the tissue is healed, an abutment is attached to the implant in order to connect the replacement tooth to the implant. Your replacement tooth is then attached to the abutment and you’re all set. The tooth will be chosen to carefully match the colour and size of the teeth around it as closely as possible in order to ensure no one will know the difference.
NEED TO KNOW INFO
While an implant is permanent and as strong or stronger than your other teeth, there are a few things you should know about the process and care afterwards.
Depending on how involved your procedure is, it may take one visit or several to finish.
You’ll have to take care of your implant like all your other teeth, with proper oral hygiene like brushing and flossing.
You’ll have to do follow-up checkups to ensure your implant is working properly.
Implants might cost more than other dental procedures and your insurance may not cover it.
Rarely there are complications with implants like bleeding, infection, numbness, injury to the sinus cavity or nearby muscles, or the implant not bonding to the bone.
If you’re missing a tooth or teeth and think the best solution would be to get a dental implant, come in to north Edmonton’s Northtown Dental Associates and talk to your dentist about whether this is the best solution for you. Once you’re vetted, we can get the process started for you so you can get back to your old self in no time.
